Brief Guide:
Annual Wildflower
Flowering Times:
May - September
Additional Information:
Common Poppies were traditionally found in arable fields where they
established from the disturbed soils of spring seedbed preparations for cereal
crops. Poppy seeds are naturally hard coated and can remain dormant in free
draining soils in excess of a hundred years. Rarely seen today other then on
disturbed ground or amongst arable crops in organic farming systems. The most
reliable establishment is obtained from spring to early summer sowings
into a warm soil. Like most annual wildflowers sunlight is important for
germination so Common Poppy seeds should be surface or very shallow sown into a
fine, clean seedbed.
