Managing horse pastures on
cold, heavy clay soils can prove difficult as grass growth and regrowth can be
slow in early spring due to low soil temperatures. Meadow Fescue and Timothy
were traditionally used for grass production on cold wet ground in areas such as
West Wales before the introduction of artificial fertilisers and modern ryegrass
varieties out performed these older species and dominated intensive short term forage
leys. This mixture establishes a closely knitted, durable, hardwearing
sward and provides reliable grazing earlier in the growing season, specially on
low input pastures. For further discussion
