Most lawns require an occasional
top up of grass seed to keep them in first class condition. Lawns may thin out due
to plant losses after a cold or wet winter, extended periods of dry weather or just
from the general wear and tear of everyday use. The slender leaved grass species
in our lawn repair mixture may be used for patching up a damaged area or overseeding
an entire lawn, particularly after thatch removal or general scarifying to encourage
a dense, even turf. A good quality lawn seed mixture of fine leaf fescue and bentgrass
will establish in any unoccupied areas leaving little or no space in a turf for
weed invasion and retain good year round colour. Overseeding lawn seed is one of
those unfortunate jobs which requires making a turf look worse before it looks better
as the surface requires vigorously scratching over (scarifying) to expose some soil
as a seedbed. This action must be implemented simply because small lawn seeds need
to be in intimate contact with soil and moisture to successfully germinate and establish.
Once overseeding has been carried out it is very important to roll the sown area
firm again to consolidate the seedbed and further guarantee the applied grass seed
is in good contact with the soil.
