For those looking to get a site green and tidy in the shortest possible  time, especially early or late in the growing season. Italian ryegrass produces a large seed with high energy reserves and will germinate at lower temperatures compared to most other grass species. This enables the emerging seedlings to very quickly establish vigorous roots and shoots, even if the seedbed is not ideally prepared. Italian ryegrass is short lived and is only included in the mixture to provide cover until the perennial amenity ryegrass becomes fully established. Sow the mixture at the recommended rate, rake into the soil surface, roll to squeeze the seed into contact with the soil and then either water well or wait for rain. Cut at 2-3 inches on a regular basis to encourage the plants to spread out quickly filling any space between them.
