An excellent alternative to standard lawn seed mixtures which often struggle on poor quality or low fertility soils without regular applications of artificial fertiliser. Once established, white (Dutch) clover absorbs nitrogen from the atmosphere and bacteria converts it to available plant food in biological nodules attached to the clovers roots. This free fertiliser slowly leaches from the nodules and other plant residues feeding the adjacent companion lawn grasses, keeping them lush and green.
There are some points worth considering before purchasing a grass and clover lawn seed mixture. Clover plants are not particularly tolerant of high traffic wear, can become dominant in a turf (they are difficult to eradicate) and can stain quite badly if the leaf is bruised or broken whilst in contact with cloths or other fabrics. However, this is the most environmentally friendly lawn seed mixture and clover is proven to be an easy way of maintaining a great looking, lush, green lawn without any addition chemical applications.
