Non ryegrass pasture provides a diverse range of grass species yet completely removes the elevated sugar/protein content of modern, improved, rich (and even tetraploid) ryegrass varieties which are so often included in cheaper mixtures and yet clearly associated with easy weight gain and/or the increased risk of equine laminitis.

We have added perennial pasture herbs to our Non Ryegrass Equine Pasture mixture to provide additional natural vitamins and minerals to the diet of any grazing horse, alpaca, llama, pony, donkey or mixed grazing with sheep compared to that of a 100% grass only diet.

One of the main benefits of establishing pasture herbs in a paddock or grazing pasture is a greater depth of soil is permeated by tap roots.

This in turn encourages the extraction of moisture, nutrients and minerals from much lower in the soil strata.

Critical trace elements can also be lifted to the surface into the stems and leaves of herbs which (usually) are readily consumed by foraging equine animals and/or sheep.

Best suited for: Equine and mixed grazing pastures where ryegrass-free, low sugar forage with deep rooting grasses and added herbs is required to support higher forage diversity, improved mineral intake and more natural grazing conditions for horses and other grazing animals.

Horse Pasture Without Ryegrass seed is ideal for pony paddocks, lower stock levels in pastures (where grass yield is not the priority) or the strip grazing of horses and ponies on restricted intake management.

Despite not having the usual ryegrass content the included grass species still produce a durable, persistent and hardwearing sward suitable for establishment on most soil types.

Managing horse pastures on cold, heavy or clay soil can prove difficult as grass growth and regrowth can be slow, particularly in early spring, due to naturally lower soil temperatures.

This blend is based on Meadow Fescue and Timothy which were traditionally used for grass production on cold, wet ground in areas such as West Wales.

With the post war introduction of artificial fertilisers, 100% ryegrass mixtures outperformed all previous, more diverse blends to become the favoured choice for intensive, short term forage production.

However, 100% ryegrass is not always the best choice or indeed the most suited species for the more clay based soils.

Horse Pasture Seed For Clay Soil is a take on the more traditional mixture but also includes a little late heading ryegrass for its tillering properties, as a buffer and bottom grass filler.

The mixture establishes a closely knitted, durable, hardwearing grazing sward which provides a more suitable forage for equine grazing under less than ideal conditions.

Sow at the full acre rate in late spring/early autumn or overseed at 10.00 kg per acre.

Best suited for: Horse pastures on heavy, cold or clay soils where reliable establishment, improved regrowth and durable grazing sward performance are required under slower growing ground conditions.

Sow horse pasture herb seeds (without Yarrow) at 20 grams per square metre as a stand alone herbal strip on the edge of a field (for ease of management) or use to overseed an existing equine paddock or pasture at 0.50 to 1.00 kg per acre.

This mixture may be added to any of our Permanent Horse Pasture products.

Our 10.00 kg packs of Equine Gateway Repair Seed mixture contain a blend of fast growing annual and biannual grass species for rapid re-establishment plus persistent perennial ryegrass and strong fescue for the underlying, long term repair.

Maximum grass production is paramount to reducing unnecessary additional feeding costs, particularly if the expense of renting extra grazing ground can be avoided.

Reinstating sometimes difficult areas such as poached or damaged gateways, areas around feeding stations, water troughs, stable entrances and walkways to usable grazing grass must be a priority.

The seeds are best hand broadcast onto a crumbly harrowed or raked surface at a reasonably dense rate.

Then (ideally) the seedbed should be lightly harrowed or raked again before rolling or treading the surface down firm.

This puts the seeds into intimate contact with the soil for efficient soil to seed moisture transfer and ultimately more reliable germination and faster establishment.

Equine Gateway Repair seed has the ability to quickly produce good grass coverage in only a few weeks providing moisture is available and the average daytime temperature is above 12C.

Best suited for: Rapid repair of poached or high-wear equine areas such as gateways, feeding stations, water troughs, stable entrances and walkways where fast establishment and long-term durability are required.

A blend of useful species for Horse Pasture Overseeding on any soil type.

A very economical way to repair lightly damaged horse or pony paddocks without the requirement, restraints and/or cost of ploughing and reseeding.

This mixture is also highly suitable as a general ‘top up’ for spring or autumn applications.

Best applied at 10 kilograms per acre via a broadcast spreader between harrowing and rolling operations as this sequence very effectively puts the seeds into intimate contact with the soil.

Timing is everything when it comes to seeding.

The ground should not be hard and dry, too soft or wet.

Ideally the seeds will be firmly in place just before rainfall when the ground is either warm or warming.

On very free draining ground timing is not so essential and seeds may be applied earlier and late in the season.

However, when it comes to heavy clay soil, seeds must not sit in water logged conditions when the ground is relatively cool as emerging seedlings could easily damp off, from which they never recover.

Horse Pasture Overseeding is suitable as part of the ongoing management required to maximise plant density within an equine grazing sward, maintain or increase grass production and/or minimise the risk of weed infestation of open poached or over grazed pasture.

Grazing may continue as usual if the ground allows.

In wetter conditions, or if the sward continues to be cut up, it would be best to remove the grazing animal/s (if possible) until favourable conditions return.

For severely damaged areas (conditions worse than our example picture) we strongly recommend treating the area as a complete reseed using a suitable Equine seeds mixture from our Horse and Pony range at the ‘per acre’ sowing rate to fully reinstate or improve the character, diversity and yield of the grazing sward.

Best suited for: Lightly damaged horse and pony paddocks requiring cost-effective overseeding to improve sward density, maintain grazing productivity and repair minor wear without full reseeding.

Our Economy Permanent Horse Pasture is blended from the most common and practical agricultural forage species used for long term grazing.

We avoid the inclusion of clover, high sugar hybrid and/or cheap amenity (dwarf) perennial ryegrass varieties and make speed of establishment, ground cover, sward persistence and the ability to recover from grazing the top priorities so the end user has a basic but durable and usable grass sward.

For new pasture the seeds are best broadcast sown over a well prepared, loose seedbed, lightly harrowed or raked and then rolled or firmed down in any way to put the seeds into intimate contact with the soil and soil moisture.

Germination and establishment thereafter are reliant on ambient temperature, available moisture and soil fertility.
