This Woodland Glade Wildflower Seeds mix suits a Hedgerow, an open area within a copse (Glade) or the semi shade of a sparsely populated woodland or orchard. Tree management may be required to provide appropriate sunlight to warm the seedbed and to further prevent the leaf canopy closing over the area after establishment. Whilst the woodland wildflower species in this mix are partially shade tolerant they do benefit greatly from opening up the area and will flourish with less competition for sunlight.

It is extremely important to eradicate all nettles, brambles, ground ivy, any other broadleaf and grass weeds before sowing this mixture.
All existing weeds in the seedbed should be controlled by hoeing or with a general herbicide before sowing takes place and low soil fertility should be maintained at all times.
For the best results, broadcast these Woodland Wildflower Meadow seeds on to a fine, clean seedbed which already has a little loose soil on the surface. Lightly rake them into the loose soil before rolling the surface firm again.
Top a glade in October and remove all autumn leaf litter when ground conditions allow.

Never apply fertiliser to an area sown with Woodland Glade Wildflower Seeds.

All plant life demands a certain amount of water from soil. Built up, dry and/or free draining ground can be a problem to most fauna species as there may not be enough moisture available at times to sustain healthy plant growth, particularly during the summer months.
The species in this specific Wildflower Meadow For Dry Soil mixture are known to inhabit such areas and are particularly suited to soils with low water retention. Some desiccation of the native wildflower plants may still take place on occasion but they are all well adapted to producing new growth as soon as suitable levels of soil moisture become available, usually soon after adequate rainfall.
Early and/or late sowings can be an advantage on particularly free draining sites as more moisture is generally available to developing seedlings.

All broadleaf and grass weeds should be controlled by hoeing or with a general herbicide before sowing takes place. Low soil fertility should be maintained at all times.
For the best results, evenly broadcast the entire seeds mixture over a fine, clean seedbed which already has a little loose soil on the surface. Lightly rake them into the loose soil before rolling, treading or tamping the surface firm again to place the wildflower meadow seeds into intimate contact with the seedbed.
Perennial wildflower meadows often take over 12 months to fully establish so we include a little native annual wildflower seed in our mixtures for additional first year colour.

Limestone and Chalk Soil of neutral and higher ph (alkaline) can produce some of the best wildflower meadow landscapes. This is often due to the below average nutrient content of these types of soil preventing the companion grasses from becoming dominant and over powering more delicate flora.
The wildflower species in this mixture are highly suited to the free draining and warmer ground associated with calcareous type (Chalk or Limestone) soil. Some meadows may even flower both in the spring and late summer (after cutting) before the onset of cooler, late autumn temperatures.
Early and/or late sowings can be an advantage on particularly free draining sites as more moisture is generally available to developing seedlings.

For a real chance of successful establishment of a Wildflower Meadow for Sand or Acidic soil then only the most suitable species must be sown. Unlike other soil types where flower and grass species may survive outside of their normal habitat, sandy soils are more often acidic and far less forgiving.
This is by no means the most flamboyant wildflower seed mixture but it will display reasonable colour and together with the non-competitive companion grass will persist for many years. If a more diverse wildflower meadow is required than an application of crushed lime (not builders lime) to control any soil acidity before seeding is the only workable, long term solution.

All broadleaf and grass weeds should be controlled by hoeing or with a general herbicide before sowing takes place. Low soil fertility should be maintained at all times.

Clay Soil can be a problem to some native fauna as excessive moisture can be detrimental to healthy and sustained root growth in the winter whilst clay soil can dry like concrete in the summer. This can be true of both wildflowers and grasses. The species in our clay soil mix are known to freely inhabit these conditions and are very suited to the character of clay, or clay based soils.
This Wildflower Meadow for Clay Soil mixture does also does extremely well around ponds, aside a water course (such as a steam or river bank) and on most slow to drain areas providing the soil temperature is reasonably good. In our experience it is best to avoid late and early season sowings, particularly on heavier, wetter soils.
On smaller areas it can be of great benefit to work some grit into the seedbed before sowing as this can significantly reduce the risk of seedlings damping off during early establishment.

All broadleaf and grass weeds should be controlled by hoeing or with a general herbicide before sowing takes place. Low soil fertility should be maintained at all times.

Diverse Wildflower Meadow Seeds mixture is a step up from our ‘Basic’ blend and with nearly 30 carefully chosen species of the very best native wildflowers really excels in producing a rich, sustainable habitat and a balanced display of natural colour over an extended flowering season.
Wildflowers are the very life blood of the countryside with many of our most endangered butterflies and insects relying on this type of habitat as a natural food source for survival. Not only do diverse and colourful wildflowers play a vital role within our countries delicate ecosystem, the natural attraction to native and migrating butterflies can be very rewarding and also very pleasing to the eye.
Perennial wildflower meadow seeds often take over 12 months to fully establish so we include a little native annual wildflower seed in this mixture for additional first year colour.

Never apply fertiliser or any type of selective, broad leaf weed control to an area sown with diverse wildflower meadow seeds.
