Cottage lawn with small leaf white clover seed is an excellent alternative to standard garden lawn seed mixtures which often struggle on poor quality or low fertility soils without regular applications of artificial fertiliser.
Once established, small leaved white clover absorbs nitrogen from the atmosphere and bacteria converts it into available plant food in small biological nodules attached to the clovers roots. This free fertiliser slowly leaches from the nodules and other plant residues feeding the adjacent companion lawn grasses, keeping them lush and green.
Clover also produces a deep tap root meaning the plant stays green in prolonged periods of drought without additional watering even on the poorest quality/free draining soils .
There are some points worth considering before purchasing a grass and small leaf white clover lawn seed mixture. Clover plants are not particularly tolerant of high traffic wear, can become dominant in a turf (they are difficult to eradicate) and can stain quite badly if the leaf is bruised or broken whilst in contact with cloths or other fabrics.
However, this is the most environmentally friendly lawn seed mixture and small leaf white seed is proven to be an easy way of maintaining a great looking, lush, green lawn without addition chemical applications.

SOWING INSTRUCTIONS
- Produce a firm, weed free seedbed clear of large stones and any other debris.
- Rake or harrow over the surface to create a thin layer of fine soil (tilth) approximately 10-20mm deep.
- Split the total quantity of amenity grass seed to be applied into two equal amounts.
- Apply the first half over the entire area either by hand or by using a broadcast spreader.
- Gently work most of the applied seeds into the tilth with a firm rake or harrow.
- Apply the remaining seed in the same way and again, rake or harrow most of them into the tilth.
- Finally, lightly roll or tread over the surface to squeeze the seeds and tilth down into the seedbed. This method ensures the lawn seeds are evenly spread, set at different depths and in good contact with the soil. All of which helps to anchor the seeds in position so as not to float away during heavy or persistant rainfall and to retain the correct moisture level for quicker germination.
- Lawn seed may also be surface sown however, germination may be uneven and significantly slower particularly during periods of prolonged sunny, dry or windy weather even with regular irrigation.
