Hybrid ryegrass is a halfway house between high yielding Italian ryegrass and the quality/persistence of perennial ryegrass. This cross over of characteristics make a carefully selected blend of hybrid ryegrasses an extremely productive crop for up to 4 years, ideal for mid term cutting leys. Not only is this mixture better yielding than perennial ryegrass (over the term of the ley) but the higher sugar content of hybrid ryegrass maintains the quality of the sward.
Consequently the forage produced will have a higher soluble carbohydrate content and better digestibility values than most short term Italian ryegrass mixtures. This both aids silage fermentation and makes aftermath grazing extremely palatable resulting in increased voluntary intake.
