Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass (diploid)
Lolium perenne
Most commonly used in medium to long term grazing pastures, modern hay meadows and cutting leys
Diploid grasses contain less moisture than tetraploids and are therefore generally easier and faster to dry for hay
Intermediate Perenial Ryegrass is an excellent base grass for long term leys, permanent pasture and being highly responsive to fertiliser or FYM applications (plus a rapid regrowth rate), is common to most Agricultural grass seed mixtures .
Some modern intermediate perennial ryegrass cultivars are now being bred as a high sugar grass. Using an appropriate variety for the end purpose is essential, particularly when it comes to selecting grasses for horse pasture or pony paddock mixtures.
