Strong Fescue or to use its official full name; Strong Creeping Red Fescue is a useful amenity grass included in mixtures for its ability to help produce a reliable, robust and durable turf particularly in low maintenance or non prestigious areas.
It is a relatively low yielding species but grows well on in a wide range of soil conditions.
We very often see a high percentage of Festuca Rubra Rubra used as a cheap filler in poorer quality lawn seed products. However, it is more purposefully added to seed mixtures for hard wearing lawns as a binding grass, banked areas to stabilise soil or in Horse and Pony Pastures to knit the sward together to help minimise surface damage.
Ornamental type Lawn Seed products should contain the better quality Slender Creeping Red Fescue (festuca rubra litoralis) rather than the Strong.
