Westerwolds Annual Ryegrass
lolium multiflorum westerwoldicum
An annual agricultural species of fast growing and very high yielding ryegrass.
Extremely useful as a cover crop to establishing leys or pasture, a catch crop or for the production of emergency forage.
It offers good recovery from defoliation and may crop three times following an autumn sowing in favourable seasons.
If autumn sowing (after maize), annual ryegrass should be combined with Italian ryegrass as a buffer against winter kill, particularly in more northern areas.
Being very responsive to high nitrogen fertiliser inputs, Westerwolds annual ryegrass is sometimes used to provide a quick bite for grazing in only a few weeks from a spring sowing but is more commonly sown for cutting and the high volume production of silage.
Occasionally used as fast growing grass seed for emergency cover or ‘quick resolve’ on amenity sites to bring bare ground into green cover as quickly as possible before a social event or function.
