After decades of immaculately manicured garden lawns the fashion has somewhat turned to Wild Lawn Seeds. To embrace nature around one’s own home the current trend is to ‘re wild’ as many areas as possible. Some suggest simply leaving lawns uncut but this often turns to a mulchy mess by late summer/early autumn and rarely sees anything useful to nature emerge from the lignified mat of dead, flat remnants of turf grasses. With a little management (4 cuts a year) it is possible to establish a perennial WILD LAWN with suitable, shorter stemmed wildflower species sown together with non-competitive grasses for the very purpose of providing a source of pollen and nectar and a short, mixed species turf for insects and invertebrates.
Either sow the mixture from scratch into a clean seedbed in autumn/early spring or overseed into an existing lawn area following the appropriate method stated (Please see the Instructions PDF at the bottom of this page) Initially mow/strim every couple of weeks before reducing the cuts to 4 times a year i.e. 2 in the spring, one in late summer and a final cut/strim in mid to late autumn. If possible, remove the plant matter during or after cutting to a height no less than 1 inch (25mm).
DO NOT APPLY FERTILISER OR WEED CONTROL TO ANY AREA SOWN WITH WILD LAWN SEEDS. Any initial weed infestation will have to have to be cut or strimmed. Persistent, broadleaf weeds must be removed by hand.
